Cap Details

  • 1875 period, US Army, 1872 Pattern, New York State Militia,
    Infantry Officer's Dress Cap

  • This Dress Cap is of the US Army, 1872 Pattern. In 1875 the Army adopted the crossed rifles insignia for the Infantry thus replacing the old hunting horn style used earlier. This dress cap belonged to an Officer serving in "M" Company of the 13th Infantry Regiment of the New York State Guard as the front attests. The white color pompon, top welt and lower piping are for the Infantry branch of the service. The chin strap is missing. The interior is well marked with a very rare manufacurer's label of: "Oehm & Company Army & Navy Contractors Baltimore, Mayland." Condition inside is very good to a low-excellent. Exterior condition is good to very good condition with some blue felt moth damage in the right rear. Hat still looks very nice from the front, top, and left side. Only the right/rear shows the mothing. The visor is firm and excellent with what looks like purpose built crazing. The lower leather exterior band is also excellent. The pompon is also in very good condition but a little dirty from it's great age. The museum has owned several of these 1872 Pattern Dress Caps over the years, and this example is the best that we have ever had. Price is a bargain!
