Cap Details

  • This hat is of the post 1955 to the mid 1960's period as evidenced by it's manufacture. It is a US Army, Cap, Service, Wool Fur Felt, Army Green 44, Field Grade Officer's. This hat is named inside to a Army Chaplain "Duhl". This hat is in good overall condition. It is sound thoughout, but soiled inside, and very lightly soiled at one small spot on top. The body and visor felt are perfect, and the gold chin strap and visor's oak leaves lightly age toned (making them look even richer than when new). This hat comes with it's original hard plastic carrying box. We have never seen one like it before, and it is quite elaborate, and was probably expensive. It even has 2 interior compartments for nick-nacks. The box can hold 2 hats and includes 2 plastic covers used to secure each hat in place (how thoughtful!). The box even has a glued-in instruction sheet. Found in one of the compartments is a paper tag which has 3 brown buttons attached to it. But what is really cool is that these buttons are labeled as "Clip-on's" and appear to be sewn on a shirt/uniform while they really are of the removable "clip-on" style (how neat!). Also included in this hat box are Chaplain Duhl's pair of white gloves (which could use a cleaning), and are size and hallmarked. Lastly, found in the hat box is a white vestment scarf (it has been cleaned by us). This is a rare and great lot, well worth researching.

  • Comments from the Curator:

This Tank Museum has a large collection of Tank Chaplain's uniforms, etc. We are always on the look-out for more. During this search we came across this grouping which we acquired for the museum if the Chaplain had any "Tank" in him upon research. But current time restraints prevent us from researching the biographical Army career of Chaplain Duhl, so here is your chance to get him. If you know your "stuff", you will know the rarity of Chaplain's items in general. And this set is fantastic as it is both identified as to the name of the Chaplain, and identified as to his assignment. Add to that a rare and unusual hat box and other neat sundry items, and you got a real treasure here. The Fort Hamilton, L.I., NY Chaplain's School should be able to help you ascertain the career of Chaplain Duhl. But if it turns out he was assigned to a Tank unit - then please don't tell us or we will cry! This is a great set for the price. Note: this museum has a beautiful Army Green Chaplain's Uniform for sale on this website - CHECK IT OUT!
