1930's to the WWII period, US Marine Corps., White, General's, Peaked
Service Cap
Cap Details
This hat dates anywhere from the 1930's to the WWII period. It is a US Marine Corps., White, Field Grade Officer's,
Peaked Service Cap. This hat was acquired from a elderly collector who had sold off his collection of a great many years.
He reported that this hat once belonged to a US Marine Corps General, but alas, he could no longer remember the name
(what a great shame). These white hats were very common in the Pacific during the pre-war years. Most had been retired
by the war years - except for special occasions. This hat is of the pre-war to early war construction. It's condition is only fair
as it is heavily stained and age yellowed on top and band. However it's body, interior and exterior is perfectly sound. The hat
only shows much sweat and rain staining as would be expected from an Officer caught in numerous Pacific theater monsoons.
The visor felt is perfect, and the gold chin strap and visor's gold oak leaves are all perfect, but dark age toned as expected.
The interior rates a very good condition with only a very slight fraying at it's silk lining, and the leather sweat band is coming partially
loose. Still, this hat is very presentable and shows much character.
Comments from the Curator:
AH - if only this hat were named, what a treasure it would be. Yes it is very aged, but it just screams out at you with it's great
character. Pre-WWII hats such as this bring in really high prices thus putting them out of reach of most collectors. Here is
a chance for a "real" one, that if it could talk, what great stories it could tell! This one won't break your piggy bank.
