Cap Details

  • This hat is 1944 dated. It is a US Army, "Hat, Service, Field", or "Campaign Hat." This hat belonged to an Enlisted Man as is evidenced by the round shape brass frontal insignia. This soldier served in the Infantry branch of the service as is evidenced by the (once) blue hat cords. These hat cords have seen so much sun and rain that they have almost completely faded to the original cord color. The sweat band and bow are intact and in excellent shape. They are also fully attached, which is just short of a miracle as these liners are almost always detached from age rotting of the cotton attaching thread. The leather liner is also marked "PQMD-277-1-1-4321 CONTR. No. 3889RS-1944". One of the (once) blue hat cord tassles is now frayed on each end. The other is excellent. The leather chin strap is all present, but one end is now broken at the rivit (repairable). The nickel fitting are all present (another miracle) and are bright. The inner body rates excellent. The outer body is in perfect original shape with no distortions and the felt rates at an excellent to a near mint condition. This is a well worn, but magnificant specimen!

  • Comments from the Curator:

These hats are in great demand these days. Many fradulent dealers love to mess with them by adding more pricy Officer's eagles and chin straps, and/or by putting on new repro. hat cords to "spiff-em-up" and thus charge more. This is an all original and untouched example that is hard to upgrade. The faded and frayed hat cords add great character to this lovely piece. The addition of perfect inside gold stenciling and dating makes this hat a great collectible. The price reflects it's great character. Don't snooze on this one!
