Cap Details

  • 1860's to the 1870's period, US, Militia Beaver Chapeau de Bras, for the "Honorable Artillery Company"

  • This chapeau de bras (pronounced: "Sha-po-d-bra") is of the 1860's to 1870's approximate period. It is a US, militia pattern chapeau in that it has several divergences from those Army issue types. This hat is in excellent overal condition. It is of an identified militia unit which is very rare as most of those great many units are unknown today. This chapeau is also only for a very small company size unit and not for the much more common larger regiment sized unit. This makes it much more rare and desirable. The unit is for the: "Honorable Artillery Company", and very worthy of further research. The beaver felt body is very intact and shows much fur felt remaining. Edges are excellent except for a few small cracks. Both front and rear silk bows are still present, but show their age. The silk side sun burst rosette is like new (and that is rare for any silk item of this great age). The rosette has a leaded brass laurel leaf rosette which is in excellent shape, but due to it's heavy lead construction will not remain in it's place anymore due to weak prongs. It can be made to stay in place, however we recommend that the buyer use a few pins to hold it in place to prevent damage. The silk rosette has brass lettering "AHC" which is believed to represent the "Honorable Artillery Company" militia unit. The red feather plume is both strong, bright and full making this chapeau a magnificant specimen ( usually the plumes have long since fallen appart or have been lost). The interior purple paper lining is about half there. The sweat band, as usual is missing. The maroon crown lining is present and in excellent condition, and has the printed manufacturer's label of: "Brent & Bush Boston", which is a well known military outfitter. There is a white and red paper size label also found inside. There is another white and red paper label found inside which has "Cadet Veterans" hand inked on it. Overall this chapeau de bras is magnificent and hard to improve upon. For the advance collector or museum.
