1880's period US Army Militia Officer's
Chapeau belonging to "Louis E.
Vierbeller"
Cap Details
1880's period, US Army, Militia Officer's, Chapeau, belonging to "Louis E. Vierbeller"
This hat is very difficult to identify. It follows somewhat the US Army pattern of 1872, however there are many divergences.
If is made up of correct Army style fur-felt and velvet trim. It has a period gross grain bow in front and one black and one
white ostrich feathers. It has a manufacturer's label of: "Wm. Horstman Company", which is probably the most famous
of all US Army/Militia outfitters. There were many thousands of para-military militia organizations during that time period, with the greater
majority being unknown as of now. Most of these organizations that disappeared only had a dozen or so men in their ranks
and are so obscure that they will probably never be known. Add to that fact that many old Fraternal organizations wore similarly
modified US military headgear, and the identification problem becomes exacerbated. The exterior of this chapeau is
good with excellent feathers, and velvet trim. The fur-felt is 75% intact, and there is some edge tearing. Interior is good with
sweat band missing. This is a rare and interesting piece worthy of further research.
