This shako is of the 1870's to 1900 period. It is a US, "Virginia Blues" Regiment, Militia, Sergeant's Shako. This shako
is named under the rare green visor: "Sergeant R.C. Pierce", and "Cayton", and "L.G.C." These helmets are very rare
to find, and this example is in excellent interior and exterior condition. The white feather plume is in excellent condition and is all
original (many are fakes). Both chin scales/straps are present and in good shape (a tiny end piece is missing). The plumholder
screw is a replacement, but not difficult to replace. Leather shows minor shrinkage in back. The Dragoon's eagle and star-burst
and all other fittings are original and untouched (just try to find one today that some moron didn't ruin by polishing!). We
have seen only about a half dozen of these helmets in 40 years, and this by far is the finest example ever encountered. Impossible
to improve upon and a bargain.
