Uniform Details

This uniform is dated July 17th, 1961. It is a US Army, White Mess Uniform, that appears to have many, but not all of the design features of the 1938 Pattern, White Mess Uniform. Many of these types of formal dress uniforms were purchased from civilian sources thus accounting for it's departure from exact design criteria. The lower sleeve has the insignia of a Lieutenant General (i.e.: a 3 Star General). This uniform is named to "Robert W. Colglazier, Jr.". Born in 1904, he was commissioned in 1925. In 1942 he was a Plans Officer, Engineer Section in the Mediterranean Base Section. From 1943 to 1945 he was the Acting Chief of Staff to the H.Q. of NATOUSA, MTOUSA, ETOUSA and TSFET. From 1951 to 1956 he was in the Chief Control Office, then a Deputy Chief of Staff, then a Director of Programs & Budget, and finally a Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff, all for logistics in Washington. Between 1956 and 1957 he was the Commanding General of H.Q. US Army Europe Command Zone. Then between 1957 and 1959 he was the Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics. Between 1959 and 1964 Colglazier was the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics. Then in 1964 he was also the Commanding General of the Fourth US Army. Colglazier retired in 1966 as a Lieutenant General, he died in 1993. He is perhaps best known for his participation in the building of the Pentagon. This uniform includes it's gold color Officer's epaulettes that are worn by all rank Officers that wore this type of dress uniform. This uniform includes it's original 12/9/55 dated, matching pattern, General's dress trousers that are interestingly enough named to another General, but in this case with the name of: "General A.L. Crow 23711(?)". The spelling of "Crow" is difficult to read accurately and may in fact be spelled somewhat differently then as indicated here. Also added to help complete this uniform is a 1958 dated, peaked service cap, twill, white. This rare hat is named inside to "Colonel Harold Hoenig". This Field Grade Officer's hat is correct for this type of a uniform. A vintage, commerical white vest with buttons has been added to help complete the grouping. In addition to this is included 8 pages of historical/biographical informaiton on Colglazier, plus 2 computer scanned photos of him with his medals in his Army green uniform and his khaki colored uniform. Condition is very good, but it does have a few tiny moth holes and it shows it's age toning. The front chain between the buttons needs to be added (easy to find or fabricate).

Comments from the Curator:

This museum obtained "Ole" General Colglaizer over 6 years ago from a large collection of General's uniforms sold off by a very advanced uniform collector. At that time there was no biographical information available on him and the seller assured us that Colglazier had some "Tank" in his blood. Well after many hours of painstaking research by the musem's researcher, the history of Colglazier was finally ascertained. Lo and behold there was not a spec of "Tank" history anywhere in him! He does however have a long and interesting career with much non-combat WWII period service. Due to his non-Tank service the Directors have decided to put this grouping up for sale. The lower price reflects his lack of combat service in WWII. However it should be noted that this is still an excellent attributed grouping.
