WWII period, US, American Red Cross, Woman, Volunteers, 1-piece
Dress belonging to a Canteen Worker "Doughnut Dolly"
Uniform Details
This uniform is of the WWII period, it is an American Red Cross, 1-piece Dress. It belonged to a woman who served as an
A.R.C. Volunteer as is evident by the round shape cloth patch found sewn near the top of the left shoulder. This style of
a uniform was worn by Canteen Workers, who were often nick-named "Doughnut Dollies" for serving food and drinks to
US servicemen. The unifom has it's standard A.R.C. red and white color cloth cross patch sewn on the upper left breast.
This dress is unique in that it still retains it's white color epaulettes and it's top collar, and both of it's white color cuffs-which
are almost always missing from most uniforms these days. The simple grey cloth belt is missing, however it is very easy to fabricate from the
hem material. This uniform is a period size 12. Condition rates as Good, with some age yellowing and showing much wear.
Overall it is very presentable as the photos show.
Comments from the Curator:
Female uniforms of the WWII period range from the many hundreds of dollars all the way up to several thousands of dollars
for rare pieces. Para-military uniforms such as this are slowly following this trend, making them good investments. A little known
fact is that many of these organization's uniforms are quite rare today. American Red Cross uniforms, when studied as a whole,
show that there is almost limitless combinations of these uniforms making them quite fun to hunt down. This Doughnut Dolly
uniform is perhaps the most popular of all A.R.C. uniform types and are getting harder to find by the day.
