Uniform Details

  • This uniform jacket is dated May 24th, 1951. It is a US Army, "Jacket, Wool, Taupe, Shade 121 Women's, Spec. MIL-J-10876, Pattern Date 15 Jan. 1951 N.Y.Q.M.P.A." This uniform jacket is in MINT! condition. It is a 16R period size. The ultra rare small size dark bronze color buttons are amazingly all present (they are impossible to find). The jacket is un-named inside. The sleeve rank stripes are for a WAC Corporal and are of the correct style and color for this uniform. The skirt does not go with this uniform as it was only added to protect the modesty of the young lady mannequin.

  • Comments from the Curator:

  • The history of this WAC uniform is unique and quite interesting to collectors. Designed by the fashion designer Hattie Carnegie to reflect the new fresh 1950 era, it was a major departure from earlier WWII uniforms. For the 1st time the "goils" did not match the "boys." It was a high cut jacket and provacatively tight at the waist. It was also uniquely worn tie-closed at the neck. The "Dior" style skirt was high bodiced and well flared at the hips adding a "high-couture", and sexy look. However, the uniform was not well received by the WAC's. They found it to tight and high at the waist for most women's figures and movements, and they felt the color to be too "drab." The cloth tended to wrinkle and shrink after serveral launderings creating a maintenance nightmare, and the closed collar was not pracitcle in hotter climates. All this led the uniform to be quickly replaced, thus having only a 3 year life span. This makes these uniforms very rare today and rapidly escallating in price. Oddly, many people today consider this WAC uniform to be the most attractive design AND color of any Army WAC uniforms ever worn. It's strange how time changes preception!
