1901 period, British Army, Blue Dress Uniform and a Blue Mess Dress Uniform grouping,
all belonging to Surgeon, Captain, "L.L. Hawham", serving in the 2nd Devon Royal Garrison Artillery (Volunteers), Imperial
Yeomanry Regiment
Uniform Details
This is a 2 uniform grouping set all belonging to the same Officer. The period worn was before 1901 to at least the 1907
period. The 1st uniform is a Blue Dress Uniform with matching trousers. The buttons are the pre-1901 Queen's Crown,
Artillery, (silver for the Imperial Yeomanry) type. The extremely heavy silver color cuff and collar braiding is excellent and is reported
to be correct for surgeons, and possibly correct in addition to that, for Imperial Yeomanry Regiments. Gold color braiding
and buttons is believed to have been reserved for RA ("Regular Army") Regiments. Another source reports that even in RA
units, Surgeons and Veternarians did not wear gold, but wore silver braid instead. The condition of the uniform is excellent
with only a few moth nips on the back side. The trousers are very good with only a few small moth holes that are not very noticable
when worn with the jacket. The trouser buttons and boot straps with buckles are present and in good condition too. The
flaming bomb collar insignia are of the magnificent "puffed-out" style. They still show their aged gold color instead of the more
usual the more usual aged brownish color. The silver bullion epaulettes are dark aged toned and in great shape. Each epaulette
once had 3 cloth pips attached to each, which have now fallen off. Four of these 6 loose pips are included.
The 2nd uniform to this grouping is a Blue Mess Dress Uniform. It includes the blue outer jacket and the red under vest.
the buttons are the mother-of-pearl type and are all present (usually some are always missing). The extremely heavy cuff and
collar braiding is excellent and closely matches that of the 1st uniform of this grouping. The red velvet cuffs each show some moth
tracking and a small hole in each, but are still quite attractive. The heavy silver bullion epaulettes are dark age toned and in
great shape with all 3 pips still attached to each. The flaming bomb collar insignia are of the magnificent "puffed-out" style.
They still show their aged gold color instead of the more usual aged brownish color. The blue jacket material is in very good
to a low excellent condition. It's red lining is also in good condition. The red velvet vest is bright and clean. It's silver bullion
braiding is age toned but perfect. The red velvet body showes moderate scuffing wear and/or mothing - but fortunately
no moth holes.
Extras that go with this uniform grouping that provide both identification and provenance are: 1.) a 1907 dated Invataion
Card which has much writing, including this: "His Majesty's Dockyard, Devonport-Opening of North Yard Extension .... etc, etc."
2.) A rusted key which was wrapped in 2 fragments of paper. The 1st fragment is page 503/504 of "The British Medical Journal",
and the 2nd fragment is a August 24th, 1901 dated, medical publication page titled "Correspondence". 3.) a large 3 1/4"
x 6 1/2" (trunk?) manilla-style tag, which reads in both print and in individual hand-writing: "Surg(eon) Capt(ain) "L.L. Hawham,"
2nd Devon Royal Garrison Artillery (Volunteers), I. Trafalgar Place, (unreadable), Devonport, Per..." 4.) 1 vintage safety pin.
This attributed grouping is both rare, beautiful, and affordably priced.
