Uniform Details

  • This French Army uniform dates during the 2nd French Empire of approximately the 1855 to 1870 period. This uniform jacket is of the "Zouaves" pattern. These were elite Light Infantry French troops who adopted this African style of dress. This uniform is inked stamped inside: "2TA" which is for the 2nd Regiment of Tirailleurs Algeriens. This uniform also has the correct yellow color worsted style trefoil braiding in front and back. The white pockets are also correct for the 2nd Regiment of Zouaves. There is an "88" ink stamp inside which is either a issue or perhaps a re-issue date. There is a double, German, costume house ink stamp found inside, as is quite common on these old uniforms. Costume houses acquired many old obsolete military uniforms from various armies, and re-used them in theatrical productions. If not for these costume houses, a great many old original military uniforms would not be here today. This museum has many 19th and 20th century uniforms that are original and costume house marked. This particularly fine Zouaves uniform example is quite special in that it has not been retailored or modified in any way - which is quite uncommon. The interior lining is still all original and in good overall condition for it's great age. And this original lining fortunately, still retains the original "2TA" Regimental markings thus identifying the Regiment. Overall condition of this uniform is very good. Note: many of these jackets were imported into the US for wear during the Civil War. This example is not being sold as such as it is believed to have remained in Europe for most of it's life, thus the reasonale price compared to Civil War types.
