US Army 1938 Pattern White Mess Uniform belonging to a Armored
Cavalry Colonel
Uniform Details
1960's Vietnam Conflict Period, US Army, 1938 Pattern, White Mess Uniform, belonging to a Armored
Cavalry Colonel
This US Army uniform appears to be of the 1960's Vietnam Conflict period. This is confirmed by the Saigon tailor's
label found sewn inside. These beautiful dress uniforms are referred to simply as the White Mess Uniform. They were
worn only for very formal summertime functions. The gold Tank insignia pinned to each cuff indicates service in the Armored
Cavalry branch of the service. The pattern of trefoil sleeve braiding indicates the rank of a Colonel. The heavy gold embroidered
epaulettes are typical N.S. Meyer made, and they indicate Officer status. The left collar lapel shows evidence of once
having a miniature ribbon bar (as per regulations). A small false gold chain is needed for the front buttons (a cheap fleamarket
item). Condition is excellent throughout. White Mess Uniforms are rarer than most as they were rarely required thus rarely
purchased. They make striking display pieces in any collection and are even more so when they are for a Armored Cavalry
Officer.
