Uniform is dated 1981.
U.S. Army, "Coat, Combat, Woodland Camouflage Pattern,"
or "B.D.U.'s" as they were often callled.
Grouping belonged to a Engineer Lieutenant General
(i.e.: a 3 Star General), named: "E.R. (Vald) Heiberg III".

Heiberg was born in Hawaii in 1932.
Nicknamed "Vald ( rhymes with "bald", a Norwegian nickname ).
Graduated from West Point Academy in 1953 as an Engineer.
Served in Korea, Vietnam, and twice in Germany.
3 masters degrees.
A registered professional civil engineer. Some of his jobs included command assignments in the U.S. including Commander of the Corps. of Engineers Ohio River Division, also as district engineer of the Corp's. New Orleans District. In field assignments overseas he was Commander of the 4th Engineer Battalion ( Combat ) in Vietnam, and earlier he commanded an engineer platoon and 3 engineer companies in Korea and in Germany.
Was operations and training officer of a Mechanized Infantry Brigade in Germany in the mid 1960's.
Some of his other jobs was as the Presidentially appointed member ( 1 of 7 ) of the Mississippi River Commission, as President of the Coastal Engineering Research Board of Engineers for Rivers and Harbors, and Vise President of the Permanent International Association Of Navigation Congress ( PIANC ).

General Heiberg was the Program Manager for the Army's Ballistic Missile Defense ( B.M.D. ) which employed over 750 civilian and military personnel that were stationed in Alabama and at the Kwajalein Atoll. Heiberg commanded the Kwajalein Missile Range, and all told, managed over 700 million dollars annually for the above mentioned program. General Heiberg became the 46th Chief Of Engineers and Commander of the U.S. Army Corps. Of Engineers following his nomination by President Reagan and confirmation by the U.S. Senate in September of 1984.
General Heiberg retired in 1988 as the youngest Chief ever to do so in 150 years.

Heiberg was awarded many medals and awards including:

  • 2 Army Distinguished Service Medals
  • Silver Star
  • 3 Legions of Merit
  • Distinguished Flying Cross.
